Northamptonshire's Proposal to Government
In 2018 the Government asked councils in Northamptonshire to make proposals to replace the existing two tier system of local government – a county council and seven boroughs and districts – with single unitary councils.
Following a joint public consultation, the Northamptonshire Local Government Reform Proposal was submitted to the Secretary of State on 31 August 2018 by seven of the county’s eight local authorities (Corby Borough Council decided not to sign up to the proposal). It proposed to replace the councils with two new unitary authorities.
The Government then carried out its own consultation into the Proposal in December 2018 and January 2019.
On 13 May, 2019 the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government announced that two unitary authorities will be established in Northamptonshire on 1 April 2021. Parliamentary Orders will follow later this year and there will be elections to the Shadow Authorities in May 2020.
