The world’s top women cyclists will return to Daventry District this summer for the 2018 OVO Energy Women’s Tour.

The Tour is coming to Northamptonshire on Thursday 14 June for a stage from Rushden to Daventry.

Thousands of people turned out to enjoy the Grand Depart in Daventry in 2017, and hosting the finish promises to deliver an even more exciting spectacle, as the world-class cyclists sprint for the line.

The route from Rushden will take the world’s top cyclists, potentially including Northamptonshire sisters Hannah and Alice Barnes of the Canyon//SRAM team, on a new route to the south of the county, passing through Wollaston, Salcey Forest, Silverstone and Weedon Bec.

Riders will tackle the one-kilometre climb Newnham Hill climb twice either side of passing through Daventry. The second time will take place with just over three kilometres of the race remaining in what is sure to set up a thrilling finale.

Businesses across the District are invited to find out how they can benefit from the Tour at a briefing at The Sheaf Street Health Store on Tuesday 13 March at 6pm.

There is no need to book – please just turn up to find out more about the opportunities to get involved in the event.

This will be the fifth time Northamptonshire has hosted a stage of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour, a five-stage event on the UCI Women’s WorldTour.

Northamptonshire County Council (NCC), which has brought the Women’s Tour to the county every year since 2013, estimates that more than 80,000 people turned out to enjoy the race county-wide last year, bringing a £1.75m boost to the county economy.

According to the official visitor survey, 61 per cent of people who watched the race also said they felt inspired to cycle more often.

Daventry District Council (DDC) is working with its partners including NCC, Everyone Active and event organisers SweetSpot on preparations for 2018.

And DDC is once again keen to work with local businesses, community groups and other organisations such as local schools to help ensure everyone can enjoy and benefit from the event.

A series of community events will be organised around race day, with local schools, businesses and community organisations all invited to play a part. There will be opportunities for district villages along the route to get involved too, once the full details of the stage have been confirmed.

Councillor Alan Hills, Daventry District Council’s Community, Culture and Leisure Portfolio Holder, said: “We are delighted to be hosting the finish of this year’s Northamptonshire stage of the OVO Energy Women’s Tour, having staged the Grand Depart so successfully last year.

“There is sure to be a lot of excitement around the event once again, and this year offers a further chance for us all to capitalise on the opportunities to boost local businesses and inspire people to take up sport and exercise. We are looking forward to working with our partners, as well as communities and businesses in our District, to make this year’s event an even greater success.”

In total 17 teams will compete in the 2018 OVO Energy Women’s Tour, including four British squads, Wiggle HIGH5, Trek Drops, WNT Rotor and Storey Racing.

A one-hour highlights programme of every stage will be broadcast daily on ITV4 and Eurosport and available on demand via the ITV Hub and Eurosport Player. The OVO Energy Women’s Tour is a part of the UCI Women’s WorldTour, comprising 23 events around the world in 10 different countries.
