Daventry Country Park has achieved its 21st Green Flag Award, recognising it as being among Britain’s best public parks and green spaces.

The Park received the award today (Wednesday 14 October) in recognition of its excellent facilities and maintenance standards.

Usually announced in July, the Green Flag Awards were delayed this year by Covid-19. The Country Park received the award following a visit by a ‘mystery shopper’ who scored it for first impressions, how clean, well-maintained, healthy, safe and secure it is for visitors, and how well the site is managed and promoted.

The award also recognises work carried out towards encouraging community involvement, sustainability, conservation and heritage.

It comes amid a £750,000 improvement project at the Park, which has recently seen an extensive refurbishment to its popular Reservoir Café. The toilets have also been improved, while a new play area was completed last year.

Around 2.5km of pathways are currently being resurfaced, and work to improve the pier near the Visitor Centre and install a new jetty in Lovells Bay will get underway over the coming months.

Councillor Alan Hills, Daventry District Council’s Community, Culture and Leisure Portfolio Holder said: “We’re very proud that Daventry Country Park will continue to fly the Green Flag. This has been a difficult year for everyone, but it was heartening to hear how many people benefited from the peace and tranquillity of the park during the lockdown, and it was wonderful to see families enjoying the park and the play area during the summer months.

“While many of our usual events had to be cancelled, we were able to complete refurbishment work on the Reservoir Café and the new toilets, and it’s great to see the progress being made with resurfacing the pathways.

“A lot of hard work goes into maintaining the park to the high standards required of the award, and I hope the community will continue to support us by taking pride in this wonderful place, and by making the most of all it has to offer.”
