Everyone Active takes on the Channel to help people with Spinal Cord Injury

Daventry Leisure Centre, operated by Everyone Active in partnership with Daventry District Council, is encouraging the local community to take on the Aspire Channel Swim in their pool this September to raise vital funds for Spinal Cord Injury charity Aspire.

The 12 week challenge involves participants swimming 22 miles (the distance of the English Channel) in their local pools in their own time to raise money for Aspire and people who have been paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury.

The Aspire Channel Swim kicks off on 11th September at Daventry Leisure Centre, until 4th December. Last year, Aspire Channel Swimmers raised over £580,000 to support Aspire’s services: Aspire Housing, Assistive Technology, Independent Living Advisors and Aspire Grants.

Every eight hours someone in the UK is paralysed by Spinal Cord Injury; it can happen to anyone at any time and no one is prepared for how it will change their life. Aspire exists because there is currently no cure. They receive no government funding so every penny the Aspire Channel Swimmers raise is essential to continuing Aspire’s vital services.

Kathryn Boyd, Event manager for the Aspire Channel Swim, said: “Aspire Channel Swimmers truly are amazing. Fewer people have swum the Channel than conquered Everest, yet every year thousands of people take on 22 miles over 12 weeks in their own pools. It’s an incredible achievement and one that helps support hundreds of Spinal Cord Injured people every year.”

Jamie Brightwell, Everyone Active’s general manager at Daventry Leisure Centre, said: “The work that the team at Aspire Channel Swim carry out is fantastic, and they are passionate about raising awareness of Spinal Cord Injury.

“As the UK’s longest established leisure operator, we are committed to encourage the local community to lead healthier, more active lifestyles. I would encourage anyone who is looking to improve their fitness to take on this challenge, it is a great opportunity to get active at the same time as raising money for a brilliant cause.”

Join thousands of other swimmers in raising funds to ensure everyone with a spinal cord injury has the opportunity to live an independent and fulfilled life.
