Daventry District at the heart of Social Enterprise

People thinking of starting up a social enterprise in Daventry District can now receive invaluable advice and coaching at a new local support hub.

Daventry District Council is working with the University of Northampton and Inspire2Enterprise to identify prospective social entrepreneurs for the recently-launched incubator space at the iCon Innovation Centre in Eastern Way, Daventry.

The new facility launches in the run-up to Social Saturday, which takes place across the UK this weekend (14 October) to raise awareness of social enterprises, businesses that trade but make a profit for a social or environmental purpose.

Daventry District is at the heart of social enterprise in Northamptonshire, with a growing number of enterprises setting up and developing their new businesses.

Inspire2Enterprise is a business support, information, advice and guidance service provider funded by the University of Northampton. Until now its services have been predominantly delivered remotely to potential and existing social enterprises, Public Sector bodies considering social enterprise ‘spin-outs’, voluntary and community sector organisations looking to trade by way of social enterprise and corporate organisations seeking to create further social value through corporate social responsibility .

The new incubator unit within the iCon will provide social entrepreneurs with shared space, advice and coaching support from Inspire2Enterprise and access to training programmes, all designed to support them through the early stages of starting a new enterprise. This forms part of a new project, the South East Midlands Start Up Programme.

The new project is part-funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and is led by Wenta working in partnership with the University of Northampton and the University of Bedfordshire.

The project will provide an opportunity to apply for incubation space in Northampton and at the iCon Innovation Centre in Daventry. Incubation spaces are available to new start-up businesses and social enterprises as well as individuals in the pre-start phase of development. The new incubator residents will be provided with business support from our team of advisers and an environment where they can thrive and grow.

Councillor Colin Poole, Daventry District Council’s Economic, Regeneration and Employment Portfolio Holder said:  “We are delighted that the University of Northampton has chosen Daventry’s iCon Centre for its new incubator Advisory unit.  This complements the start-up companies occupying the offices at the present time.

“The University has a proven track record of supporting Social Enterprises and the Council encourages existing enterprises as well as those thinking about setting one up to take advantage of this opportunity. Social Enterprises make a real difference to our communities and this new facility is perfectly timed in the run up to Social Saturday on 14 October.”

Malcolm Johnston, Head of Enterprise said: “The South East Midlands Start-up project was created to provide a balanced mix of support and skills development for organisations focused on social innovation to effect positive social change, and designed to help social innovators develop their ideas, open up new networks and build business skills.”
