The Food Standards Agency (FSA) operates a Food Alert System which advises us about national or regional problems involving hazardous or unsatisfactory food.
These warnings give an account of the problem, details of the batch or batches of food affected, the likely distribution of the product, and the action to be taken.
Traders and members of the public can access current Food Alerts via the Food Standards Agency website.
Food Fraud Hot line
The Food Standards Agency has set up a special food fraud hot line to gather information on known or suspected fraudulent activity in the sale or marketing of food.
Calls to the hot line, on 020 7276 8527, will be put through to an answerphone where callers can leave their reports. This answerphone will be checked regularly.
Callers should leave as much information as possible as it will enable the FSA to help local authorities as they investigate food fraud.
All reports are treated in the strictest confidence, but it is useful to be able to verify and follow up reports, so callers are encouraged to leave contact details.
In addition to the hot line, there are a number of other methods of notifying the FSA about known or suspected fraud. Further details and more general information on food fraud can be found on the Food Standards Agency website.
