Volunteers wanted to improve canal sites

Daventry District Council is calling for volunteers to come forward and work on a project to improve the biodiversity of local canal sites.

The Council is working with The Wildlife Trust, British Waterways and the British Trust Conservation for Volunteers (BTCV) on a programme to make improvements to the local canal sites in the district.

The improvements will include woody growth clearance, hedge laying, clearing side ponds of invasive species and building habitats for bats and otters.

A work programme has been developed for 2012 and Daventry District Council is now looking for volunteers, either individuals or from local community groups, to come forward to help implement the improvements.

Councillor Daniel Cribbin, Environment Portfolio Holder at Daventry District Council, said: “This is a really important project, which aims to improve the important ecological areas of our district, known as Local Wildlife Sites. These sites are important habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna and require careful management.

“We have applied to the SITA Trust to help financially support the programme. We need volunteers to come forward and help us make our canal areas even better, and I would encourage people to join us in making a positive difference to our environment.”

Anyone who is interested in volunteering on the project can contact Daventry District Council on 01327 871100 or go to the BTCV website.
