University Technical College - information event for potential students and parents

  Wednesday 3 October, 4.30pm-8pm

iCon Innovation Centre, Eastern Way, Daventry, NN11 0QB

POTENTIAL students and their parents will hear about the unique education options offered by the new Daventry University Technical College (UTC) on Wednesday 3 October from 4.30pm. The open session is being hosted at the University of Northampton’s iCon building in Daventry.

Daventry UTC will open in 2013 and combine an academic education for 14-19 year olds with specialist workplace experience focussing on new technologies in engineering, construction and environmental sustainability. Daventry UTC will provide the skilled staff to meet the increasing demand by businesses in the UK for well-qualified technical specialists in this area.

As one of the key UTC partners together Moulton College, The University of Northampton Vice Chancellor, Professor Nick Petford said: “Daventry UTC will be a place for young people committed to a career in a sector experiencing massive growth. Our core partnerships with industry will mean that as a region we remain ahead of the field and that we will have the talent pool to keep driving innovation too.

“The age when young people can leave learning will be increased in two stages following legislative changes several years ago. It is raised to 17 next year and to 18 from 2015. The Daventry UTC will give a real option for engaging and relevant learning with extremely good job prospects for young people.”

Lead Daventry UTC partners includes the motorsport and precision engineering firm Cosgrove Group Limited and leading land and air freight logistics market leader DHL.

A new way of learning

At Daventry UTC, education will be taken out of the traditional classroom setting and brought into the real world.  A mix of academic studies, technical and vocational learning, employer-designed projects and work placements will be taught by industry and educational experts. To accommodate the extended curriculum the UTC will also operate an extended working day (8:30 - 5:30 Monday to Thursday, 8:30 - 4:30 Friday).
