The number of councillors that sit on Daventry District Council will reduce in May this year following the introduction of new legislation.
The Daventry Electoral Changes Order 2012 was made by the Local Government Boundary Commission on January 27 and reduces the number of electoral wards in Daventry District from 24 to 16 and the number of councillors to be elected from 38 to 36.
This year’s Daventry District Council elections on Thursday, May 3 will be staged in accordance with the Order. This means elections will take place for all 36 seats on the Council this year (elections by one-third of the Council’s seats will resume in future years). Residents may also find themselves in a newly-named or different electoral ward than previous years due to boundary changes, with representation by a different number of councillors.
The Order is based on the final recommendations of the Boundary Commission’s Electoral Review of the Council that took place last year.
The Council had called for the Draft Order to be rejected after expressing serious concerns about the final recommendations, saying that nearly all local knowledge and evidence submitted by local parishes and people had been discounted. Daventry MP Chris Heaton-Harris tabled a Motion praying that the Draft Order not be made, resulting in the Draft Order being referred to the House of Commons’ Delegated Legislation Committee for consideration on January 24. It is believed to be the first time a Draft Order relating to electoral changes had been considered by such a Committee.
Councillor Chris Millar, Leader of Daventry District Council, said: “We are obviously disappointed that the Order has been made by the Commission, particularly in light of the concerns of local people that were highlighted at the committee hearing earlier this week.”
The following table shows the new electoral wards for Daventry District Council and number of seats (councillors) to be elected. Residents of Daventry District will vote in the local elections on May 3 in accordance with these new wards.
