Committees

Councillors are appointed to sit on various committees.  All 38 Councillors meet together as the Council. The Council is the forum for political debate on policy and strategic matters and is the decision making body for all matters other than those matters delegated to the Planning, Licensing, Standards and Corporate Governance Committees. It receives recommendations from both the Strategy Group and the Scrutiny and Improvement Committee.  It delegates certain decisions to Officers. The role of the Strategy Group is to give initial consideration to potential strategies and policies and to make recommendations to the Council for decision. Task Panels may be convened by the Strategy Group or the Scrutiny and Improvement Committee from time to time in order to deal with specific business.

The majority of Council meetings are open to the public. The public can be excluded from some meetings if the items being discussed are of a confidential nature.

Under the requirements of the Local Government Act 2000, the Council has adopted a Constitution, which sets out the way in which it will conduct its business and the principles it will adhere to.
