John Nelson Opio has travelled thousands of miles to see how Environmental Health Officers at Daventry District Council are working to reduce health inequalities in the community.
John works as an Environmental Health Officer in his native Uganda, but was asked to visit Daventry by the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health as part of a Commonwealth Professional Fellowship.
The 37-year-old is spending three months in the UK with various councils across the country, and after his week in Daventry he will be heading to various other towns and cities including Corby, Derby, Nottingham and Leicester.
Health Improvement Officer Jo Davis explained how her role is to try and reduce health inequalities by educating communities about smoking, diet and exercise, and is funded by Daventry District Council and the Northamptonshire Teaching Primary Care Trust.
She said: “John came over from Uganda to spend a week with us and learn our best practice to see if he can take anything away with him back to Uganda.
“It’s about sharing expertise, not locally or nationally, but on an international level.”
Mr Opio said: “I have enjoyed myself.
“I have a few more places to visit to get a bigger picture, but I hope to take what I have learnt back to my role in the Lira district in Uganda.”
