Pupils learn about politics for Local Democracy Week

School children in Daventry have been taking part in a series of presentations at Daventry District Council in the run up to Local Democracy Week.

Pupils from schools in the Daventry district have already visited the council chamber for a series of workshops on climate change, environmental health and recycling. Some were also given a tour of the district council’s Materials Recycling Facility in High March, Daventry.

The Local Democracy Week campaign tries to get youngsters more involved in politics and make them more aware of their local council, and is being held from Monday, October 13, to Sunday, October 19.

Schools that have taken part in the sessions over the past few weeks include Welton, Yelvertoft, Barby, Weedon, Badby, The Grange and Southbrook. William Parker School, in Ashby Road, will be the final school to visit the council chamber – which is where the district councillors make decisions on key issues – when the students arrive on October 15 for a presentation on planning.

Simon Bovey, Managing Director of Daventry District Council, said: “We are very pleased to show children what the Council does.

“They usually find it fascinating and use the information back at school. The presentations give children a real taste of politics and decision making.”
