Youngsters district-wide have been commended for their efforts in this year's Daventry District Best Kept School Competition.
The contest, which is held annually by Daventry District Council, was won this year by Falconer’s Hill Infant School in Daventry.
All schools within the district were invited to take part and eight applied. They were St James Infant School, Falconer’s Hill Infant School, Great Creaton School, Long Buckby Infants School, The Grange School, Barby Primary School, Guilsborough Primary School and Welton Primary School.
The competition focused on environmental standards at school and pupil participation in improvement of the environment within their school. The judging criteria considered eco-school status, if the school had an eco-club, recycling, composting, energy efficiency and overall environmental education at school. This year the schools also submitted a 250-word statement on why they should win.
A winner’s presentation took part in the council chambers on Thursday 8th July.
The winning schools were:
1st – Falconer’s Hill Infant School
2nd – Great Creaton Primary School
Joint 3rd – Barby Primary School and St James Infants School
The first-prize winners picked up a trophy while second and third received smaller shields. All schools which took part also received a certificate from the council. The trophies ere presented by Councillor Catherine Boardman, Environment Portfolio Holder with Daventry District Council
“The Best Kept School Competition awards those outstanding schools who make commitments to help the environment. A number of areas are looked at, from the amount of litter around the school through to eco-school status and new initiatives,” said Emma Yoxen, Environmental Cleansing Officer with Daventry District Council.
“We also asked the schools to submit a 250-word statement on why they believed they should be named the Best Kept School.
“We work closely with schools as part of the national curriculum and help them to achieve environmental successes and the competition is run to showcase their hard work.”
