Young and old across Daventry district are being encouraged to get in the saddle for National Bike Week.
The event, from June 16 to June 22, is aimed at getting more people to switch to two wheels rather than using their car, particularly on short local journeys.
Daventry District Council wants local residents to make a concentrated effort to switch to pedal power on Wednesday, June 18, and has organised three initiatives to support them.
Bike 2 Work will see people calling in at Daventry Leisure Centre, in Lodge Road, en route to the office receiving a free breakfast, a “well done” certificate and use of the showers. People have already signed up to cycle in from Badby and Grandborough, among other villages.
Meanwhile, Bike 2 School is aimed at younger residents. Pupils arriving at their school gates on two wheels will get themselves a certificate and a goodie bag. Schools joining in so far include Creaton, West Haddon, Barby, Byfield, Falconers Hill, Long Buckby and Staverton primary schools, and Danetre and William Parker senior schools.
Councillor Alan Hills, Portfolio Holder for Community, Culture and Leisure at Daventry District Council, said: “In addition, we are organising a family cycle ride along a two-and-a-half-mile route around Daventry Country Park so all the family can get their 30 minutes of exercise for that day.
“It starts at the visitor’s centre at 5.30pm on June 18 and everyone taking part will get a certificate.
“Using a bike promotes good health, helps the environment and cuts congestion on the roads, and we want as many people as possible to take part this year. So I repeat the message - get on yer bike!"
Children aged under 12 must be accompanied by an adult to take part in the family cycle ride.
