An initiative to help prevent glass attacks in pubs in Daventry has been launched.
Daventry District Council is spearheading a scheme to use polycarbonate glasses in two town centre pubs.
Working on behalf of Daventry District and South Northamptonshire Safer Stronger Partnership, the council has received £1,800 to buy the safety glasses for Fridays in High Street and The Dun Cow pub in Brook Street.
Fridays is launching the initiative this weekend and will be using the glasses on a voluntary basis on Friday and Saturday evenings. The Dun Cow started using them shortly after their delivery last week.
Fridays has recently been taken over by landlords Matt Newman and Ryan Mold, who are keen to take a proactive approach in ensuring a safe night out for their customers.
Ryan said: “It’s something that we thought would be a good idea.
“Nothing has happened since we took over in June, but I spoke to the staff and a lot of them are quite happy about it and feel safer.”
Councillor Alan Hills, portfolio holder for community, culture and leisure at Daventry District Council, who is also vice-chairman of the Partnership, said: “We hope this preventative approach will encourage other pubs in the area to use polycarbonate glasses, as not only are they preventing glass attacks, they also lower the cost to the premises with regard to breakages.”
PC Tam Dunn, Licensing Officer at Northamptonshire Police, added: "I am pleased to see that the licensed trade is working with the police and local authority in putting measures in place to make their environment a safer place for all.
“I hope other venues see the benefits and follow suit."
