Olympics success paves way for local sports awards

Team GB’s record successes in the Beijing Olympics should spur on more Daventry district residents to nominate their own local sporting heroes for medals.

The finishing line for entries to the Daventry District Sports Awards 2008 is fast approaching, on September 12, so there are only a few weeks to go until judges decide on who will take the golds.

The annual awards, run by Daventry District Council, recognise local sporting talent, whether they are achieving at a local, regional, national or international level, or whether they are professional or personal achievements.

Awards are up for grabs in a number of categories and this year’s prize-giving ceremony will be held on Thursday, October 9, 2008, at the Saxon Suite of Daventry Leisure Centre, in Lodge Road.

Cllr Alan Hills, Portfolio Holder for Community, Culture and Leisure, said: “Watching Great Britain’s spectacular success in Beijing gives us a real sense of pride – but equally we should be just as proud of our local sports heroes, of all ages, salute their success and applaud their achievements.

“These annual awards are a great chance for us to reward those who shine at whatever level. I hope watching the Olympics will spur more people on to nominate an individual or club for recognition.”
