BT has decided not to appeal against Daventry District Council’s objections to the removal of 55 telephone boxes across the district.
Following BT’s plans last August to remove the phone boxes, the council formally objected to the removal of 55 of the 60 boxes following a consultation with local residents and parish councils. 34 of these were the traditional red K6 telephone boxes.
BT has told Daventry District Council that it will not be exercising its right to appeal the decision, which means that the phone boxes have been saved from removal.
BT had offered parish councils the opportunity to adopt their telephone boxes, and four councils have made a formal request take up the offer. These phone boxes are located in Boughton, Hannington, Holcot and Moulton.
In order for them to be adopted, Daventry District Council needs to take away its objections to their removal and councillors will be discussing this at the next Strategy Group meeting on Thursday, July 9.
Cllr Alan Hills, Community, Culture and Leisure Portfolio Holder at Daventry District Council, said: “This is a successful outcome for communities across Daventry district who objected to BT’s plans to remove the phoneboxes.
“The District Council objected to the proposals on their behalf because they provide a valuable local resource in areas where mobile phone reception can be poor. The traditional red phone boxes are important to the identity of the villages and should be retained for historical interest.”
