Charities have been given a cash boost, thanks to the fundraising efforts of Daventry District Council's chairman over the past 12 months.

Councillor Alan Hills, who held the chairman's post during 2007/08, raised a total of £3,290 for his chosen charities The Parkinson's Society and Crossroads Caring for Carers. Representatives from the two charities were each presented with a cheque for £1,645 by Councillor Hills and his wife, Thelma, who was Chairman's Lady during his year in office.

Linda Cockerill, Operations Manager at East Midlands Crossroads Caring for Carers’ Northamptonshire office, said the money will be used to support carers in Daventry district.

She said: "Crossroads needs to secure funding through a variety of methods to continue offering high-quality respite services and short breaks for carers and we are very grateful for this donation."

Val Hamblin, Chairman of the Northampton, Daventry and Towcester branch of the Parkinson's Society, said: "We are absolutely delighted with this donation. We support a lot of people in the district with Parkinson's Disease but have to raise our own funds and this money will really help us.  We have set up a contract with Crossroads to give carers a break for a couple of hours a week and the wide range of work we do also involves running a weekly day centre.”

Councillor Hills, who handed over the chains of office to new chairman, councillor Tony Scott, last week, added: "It has been a superb and very enjoyable year. Both of these charities are close to my heart and it was great help raise money for such worthwhile causes."
