Residents are being urged to give their views to help shape a new study exploring eco-friendly energy for new homes and businesses in Daventry.

Daventry District Council has commissioned a study to see if the town, which faces expansion over the next  decade, has the potential to develop its own renewable energy supply for future housing and commercial developments.

The study, part-funded by economic development agency Northamptonshire Enterprise Ltd, is being conducted by global environmental and engineering experts MWH (UK) Ltd, in association with renewable energy experts ESD and policy analysts RPA.

Preliminary findings have shown Biomass Combined Heat and Power (Bio-CHP) and large-scale wind power to be the most realistic options for Daventry. The company will now be carrying out extensive public consultation to move the study forward, with its final recommendations due to be published this summer.

Questionnaires are available for residents to give their views on renewable energy and parish councils and other local organisations are also being consulted.

Ian Vincent, Executive Director at Daventry District Council, said: “This study will form the basis for debate on renewable energy for Daventry and the wider district.

“It will explore what realistic options are available to us, and how renewable technology fits in with our vision to build a sustainable town as Daventry expands over the next 13 years.

“The study will consider the environmental, economic and social impact of bringing renewable technology in Daventry, and initial findings have pointed to bio-CHP and large-scale wind power as the most feasible technologies for the town.

“These options need to be explored further and the views of residents, parish councils and local organisations district-wide are vital on how we move this study forward. The questionnaires will play an important role in shaping its conclusions.”

Stephen Milburn, of environmental consultancy MWH UK, which is conducting the study on behalf of the Council, said: “We are pleased to be working closely with Daventry District Council on this interesting and forward-thinking study. Finding the most appropriate ways to improve residential sustainability is a key issue as we manage global warming issues in the future. The consultation exercise forms a key part of the study as it will enable us to incorporate stakeholder and public opinion into our final report.”
