Youngsters set for summer of fun

Children and young people across Daventry district are being given the chance to take part in a range of sports and leisure activities over the school summer holidays.

Daventry District Council’s Sports and Recreation team has organised an action-packed programme of events over the next six weeks, including Summer Holidays Sports Camp and multi-skills roadshows in rural areas.

Northampton Town FC is running a football camp for budding David Beckhams to improve their skills. It runs from Monday, August 4, to Friday, August 8, from 10am to 3pm each day and costs £15 for the week. It is aimed at eight to 16-year-olds and will be held at Daventry Sports Park.

A disability fun day will be held at the same venue on Friday, August 15 from 10am to 3pm. It is being laid on for anyone under the age of 19 with a physical or mental disability, and will give participants the opportunity to take part in sporting activities in a safe, friendly and fun environment including boccia, multi-skills, martial arts and tri-golf.

Free multi-skills sessions for five to 15-year-olds are being laid on in the summer roadshow, travelling around the area from Monday August 4 to Friday August 15. Children can just turn up on the day and join in. Sessions will be taking place in many rural villages, including Weedon, Welford, Woodford Halse, Brixworth, Barby, Long Buckby, Moulton, Crick and Byfield. Daventry Country Park is the venue for a family health walk on Wednesday August 20, from 10am, meeting at the café, while a make-your-own kite session will take place on Borough Hill on August 20, from 2pm. The cost is £1 per child and they must be accompanied by an adult.

The Get Active summer holiday camps are also back, running each week throughout the holidays at locations around the district, and the Play Rangers will be out and about running activities for young children. Click here to find out more.

Councillor Alan Hills, Daventry District Council Portfolio Holder for Community, Culture and Leisure, said: “This looks like being the biggest summer programme of activities we have ever put together for young people and shows our commitment to children and young people.

“It is a fantastic mix of crafts, sports and fun activities and we hope it will keep young people of all ages busy while they are off school.”
