Young sporting champions from across Daventry district helped the local team scoop medals in six of the nine events it entered at the 10
th Northamptonshire Youth Games – and even the mascot got in on the action!
More than 700 people from across the county were in action in 10 different sporting events, including athletics, hockey, netball, badminton, cricket and basketball, on June 28 at Kettering Leisure Village.
A total of 62 young people from the Daventry district made up the local teams, put together after a series of trials organised through local schools.
They then went through weeks of training before the main event and the record medals haul.
The day got off to a promising start when Leo the Lion, the Daventry mascot, won the mascots’ race during the opening ceremony.
Teams from Daventry went on to win gold medals in athletics, badminton (boys) and badminton (girls), silver in hockey (girls), and bronze in basketball (girls) and tag rugby (mixed).
Cllr Alan Hills, Portfolio Holder for Community, Culture and Leisure with Daventry District Council, which backed the sporting effort, said: “This is another success story for the young people of Daventry district. We have a tremendous amount of talent within the district and the annual youth games prove that, with help from the schools, our sports development officers and many others, we can be successful.
“Having attended the games myself, I would like to send my congratulations to everyone concerned.”
The Youth Games form an integral part of the Daventry District Council’s Sports Development strategy, and ensure that youngsters who take part in an activity have links to a club to continue to participate after the event.
