Daventry District Council is objecting to BT plans to remove nearly 40 traditional red phone boxes in the district.
BT revealed in June that it wanted to remove around 60 boxes in total from around the Daventry district . The proposal went out to consultation, which ended on Monday, July 21st . In response to members of the public who got in touch and its own detailed research, Daventry District Council is proposing to object to the removal of all but five of the 60 phone boxes.
The first notification – the council’s initial draft of its official response to BT – was posted on Friday , July 25. Members of the public now have until 4.30pm on August 27 to make any final comments to the council. The council must make its final submission to BT by September 6th.
In total, the council is objecting to the removal of 38 red K6 telephone boxes. It is also objecting to plans to close a further 17 more modern phone boxes, largely because the call levels suggest there is a demand in the area they are in and they provide a valuable local resource where mobile phone reception is poor.
However, it is agreeing with the removal of five modern-style boxes in Overstone, Haselbech, Preston Capes, East Farndon and Long Buckby Wharf, as very few calls have been made from these in the past 12 months.
