Free swimming sessions have proved such a success with youngsters in Daventry district that they will run for another year.
In the first five months since the initiative started in Easter this year, children have clocked up more than 12,000 free swims at Daventry Leisure Centre in Lodge Road, Daventry, over the half-term holidays.
The scheme has made such a splash that Daventry District Council has agreed to extend it until February 2009. The initiative, which is managed by SOLL Leisure on behalf of the Council, was originally due to end in February 2008.
Free sessions also ran over the Christmas and New Year holiday.
Councillor Wendy Amos, Portfolio Holder for Strategic Community and Planning at Daventry District Council, said: “It’s great news that so many of the district’s young people are taking part in this free swimming initiative.
“Extending the scheme will allow even more of our young people to dive in for some healthy fun over the school holidays.”
Martin Walters, Manager of SOLL Daventry which runs the leisure centre, said: “We are so pleased that Daventry District Council has agreed to extend the free swimming scheme for another year.
“The response from local families is so strong and it is especially good to see so many young people getting involved in a more active lifestyle.”
Between Easter and the end of the summer holidays this year, there were 12,179 free swims at the town’s leisure centre – a figure expected to rise once numbers for October and December half-term sessions are tallied.
