Daventry District Council is showing its green credentials by successfully retaining an international standard for environmental performance.
The ISO 14001 Standard is an accreditation given to businesses and organisations that are making continuous environmental improvements. The Council is addressing the challenges of climate change districtwide through a variety of schemes, including free energy efficiency and water-saving workshops for businesses, as well as helping schools to reduce their carbon footprints.
Energy-saving measures have also been fitted in the council's offices, including light sensors and water efficient taps to its toilets, and by significantly reducing the amount of time heating is switched on during the day. All Council employees are receiving environmental training and encouraged to save energy by switching off their PC monitors when not in use. And, despite the weather, more staff are travelling to work by bicycle and foot than ever before.
Councillor Catherine Boardman, Daventry District Council’s Environment Portfolio Holder, said: “By building a ‘green culture’ within the Council itself, we are leading by example hoping to show both residents and businesses how they too can do their bit for the environment and work towards tackling climate change.”
