Businesses back green charter for Daventry

Businesses are being urged to sign up to a new green charter in Daventry to show their commitment to helping the local environment.

Daventry District Council’s Environmental Business Charter covers everything from environmental responsibilities and best practice, to energy efficiency and to waste minimisation.

A number of businesses have already signed up and received an information pack outlining ways they can “work greener”, details of other organisations involved and additional resources for finding out about environmental issues. They are helping to shape a new Environmental Business Network in the town, together with the district council, the University of Northampton and waste consultancy RUR-3 Environmental.

Daventry District Council Portfolio Holder for the Environment Catherine Boardman, said: “The council’s role is very much as a catalyst and acting as an initial point of contact, helping with setting up training sessions and a business network. Those who sign up to the charter can become a member of the business network and share good practice and learn from each other.

“The network is particularly aimed at businesses wanting to improve their environmental image with an opportunity to meet other businesses in the area to learn, share ideas – and be sociable.

“Experts are on-hand to guide businesses on a number of key areas, particularly environmental legislation which can often be confusing and worrying to smaller businesses already busy with day-to-day activities.”

The Council initially conducted a consultation exercise to find out what local firms thought of a green charter idea – and received overwhelmingly positive feedback.

The new charter, which also covers trade waste, duty of care, legislation, local agreements and litter management, will be officially launched at a special event on Wednesday, March 12.

At the first network session and charter launch event, Ray Khan, Environment and Health and Safety Manager at Hambleside Danelaw, in Daventry, will talk about how being green has helped his organisation to stay competitive and increase profits.

It will take place from 8am to 9.30am at the Saxon Suite, in Daventry Leisure Centre. Breakfast is provided and registration is also free.

Any business wanting to go along to the event should contact Alice Pearce, at Daventry District Council, on 01327 302277.
