Collections increased for textiles recycling

Collections for recycling Daventry district residents’ unwanted textiles will now happen every two months rather than quarterly due to popular demand.

The revamped textiles collection service, which helps raise funds for the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance (WNAA), has proved to be hugely popular with local people wanting to recycle their used clothes, shoes, linen, curtains and soft toys.

So Daventry District Council has approved a change to improve the service. DB Collections, which picks up the materials for recycling and gives £50 per tonne to the WNAA charity, will now call at homes every other month.

Residents should not put textiles in their red box or throw them away in the grey bins, but instead put them in the special bags provided by DB Collections and put these outside on the date indicated. Bags will be delivered to residents every two months starting in September 2008.

“The collections have proved to be very popular with residents and we would like to thank all residents who have supported the scheme so far,” said Cllr Catherine Boardman, Daventry District Council’s Environment Portfolio Holder.

“Feedback has suggested that people want more collections so, from September, these will be every two months rather than every three.

“Not only is this helping us recycle more of our unwanted goods but also helping the air ambulance keep flying to help people across the region.”

In April 2008, DB Collections picked up 32 tonnes of textiles for recycling. In July, this increased to 36 tonnes. This has so far raised £3400 towards keeping the air ambulance flying.

The air ambulance is funded entirely by voluntary donations and responds to around 110 calls per month. It costs £1.4 million a year to operate – approximately £3 per minute – and can reach anywhere in Northamptonshire within 15 minutes.

Anyone who has any questions about the service can contact the Council’s Waste Management Team on 01327 871100.

Householders who live 300 metres or more outside their village boundary should ring DB Collections on 01536 480007 to arrange a collection separately.
