Mediaeval pottery fragments unearthed in town centre digs

Archaeologists digging in Daventry town centre have unearthed fragments of mediaeval pottery.

Small-scale digs have been taking place at Primrose Hill, High Street and Chapel Lane car parks this month, as part of plans to redevelop the town centre.

The team from AC Archaeology have been appointed by Henry Boot PLC, Daventry District Council’s preferred developer for Site 1 of the town centre, where there are plans to build a new library and retail complex north of High Street.

The archaeological digs form part of investigation work that needs to be carried out by the developer before a planning application is submitted for the site.

Peter Cox, Director of AC Archaeology, said: “We have found about half a dozen bits of mediaeval pottery at the rear of the library that dates back to the 12th or 13th century, which has been positively identified by an expert.

“It’s not unexpected because we knew that the town was occupied at that date, and we are hopeful we still might find something else.”

Five more digs will be carried out over the next two weeks.
