Whether it’s walking to work or school, sharing a car or walking to the supermarket, Daventry District Council wants everyone to do their bit to get healthy and help the environment next month.
The Council is holding its first Healthier You, Healthier Planet day on October 1, aimed at getting people to travel by alternative methods that are healthy and/or sustainable.
Different teams within the Council are working together to promote the message to schools, businesses and households – and they are hoping people across the district will join in.
“We wanted to do something to get the whole community working to help themselves get healthier and help the environment,” said Maria Taylor, Corporate Manager Community, with Daventry District Council.
“This might be ditching the car to walk or bike to work or school. Walking taxis and buses will be working hard at schools in the district. And for those that have to use cars, car sharing can help reduce congestion and pollution on the roads.
“At the Council, we are encouraging employees to come in under their own steam”.
“We are hoping that organisations across the district will join us and get behind the push.”
To help promote the healthy aspect of the day, the Lifebus will be parked outside shop mobility, next to the bus station, New Street, Daventry, with experts on hand to give advice on everything from keeping your blood pressure down to stopping smoking. The Countryside Rangers will be making seasonal vegetable soup to taste, and environmental officers will be handing out environmental water-saving and energy- saving freebies.
