Flytippers warned not to dump their waste

Flytippers are being warned by Daventry District Council that they face prosecution if they continue to flout the law.

It follows a crackdown on the problem this Autumn by the council’s Education and Enforcement Officer, who has issued on-the-spot fines and cautioned people who are committing offences under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

When offenders are identified, a fixed penalty notice of £75 may be issued. However more serious cases can end up in court and the maximum penalty for flytipping is a £50,000 fine and up to 5 years imprisonment.

In September a Crick resident was issued with a £75 Fixed Penalty Notice after some household waste was dumped in Yelvertoft. The penalty notice was paid in full.

In October, following a fly-tipping incident in Southbrook, a Daventry resident was identified and a £75 Fixed Penalty Notice was paid, while a Northampton resident was also cautioned for not ensuring waste from his building works were properly disposed of.

So far this month, a resident of West Haddon and a Kettering resident have each received fixed penalty notices for dumping waste on roads in the Daventry District area.

Councillor Catherine Boardman, Environmental Portfolio Holder at Daventry District Council, said: “This crackdown of fixed penalty notices to those people who continue to dump rubbish illegally should help to deter others from committing similar offences.

“I would urge anyone who is considering dumping their waste illegally to think again and dispose of your rubbish in the correct manner, otherwise you could end up facing a hefty fine or even imprisonment.

“If you are paying someone else to take your rubbish away, however small the amount, make sure they are licensed to carry waste.”
