Residents wanting to have their say on Daventry District Council’s plans to object to the removal of nearly 40 traditional red phone boxes in the area have just a few days left to submit their views.
The Council published the first notification of its response to BT’s proposals to scrap around 60 boxes in total from around the Daventry district at the end of July after having scores of letters from local people. The deadline for people to comment on that document is 4.30pm August 27.
Daventry District Council then has to submit its final report to BT by September 6 in a bid to save the threatened call boxes, many of which are at outlying villages and more remote sites in the district.
In total, the Council’s first notification objects to the removal of 38 traditional red K6 telephone boxes. It also objects to plans to close a further 17 more modern phone boxes, largely because the call levels suggest there is a demand in the area they are in and they provide a valuable local resource where mobile phone reception is poor.
However, it agrees with the removal of five modern-style boxes in Overstone, Haselbech, Preston Capes, East Farndon and Long Buckby Wharf, as very few calls have been made from these in the past 12 months.
