Families urged to be safe not sorry on Bonfire Night

Daventry District Council is urging families to take care during the bonfire night activities next month.

The Fireworks Code sets out a list of precautions that people are advised to follow in order to ensure that stay safe on November 5.

Residents who are planning on using fireworks during the next couple of weeks are advised to stick to the following guidelines:

• Keep fireworks in a closed box.

• Follow the instructions on each firework.

• Light them at arm’s length, using a taper.

• Stand well back.

• Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode.

• Never put fireworks in your pocket or throw them.

• Always supervise children around fireworks.

• Light sparklers one at a time and wear gloves.

• Never give sparklers to a child under the age of five.

• Keep pets indoors.

• Don’t drink alcohol if setting off fireworks.

• Don’t let off noisy fireworks after 11pm.

• Only buy fireworks that conform to BS 7114.

Every year Daventry District Council gives advice to the organisers of firework displays as part of a strategy to ensure that events go smoothly. Operators are referred to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), which produces guidance for firework display operators to help ensure that fireworks are not launched into the crowd or hazardous debris fall on spectators. Advice and information can be gained from their website at www.hse.gov.uk.

Safety advice can also be found at www.dti.gov.uk/fireworks or the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents website at www.saferfireworks.com.

Peter Tasker, Health and Safety Officer at Daventry District Council, said: “We hope Daventry residents will take every precaution during the fireworks period to ensure that they have a fun and safe time.”
