Daventry District youngsters make tonnes of difference to the environment

Local school children have shown their support for a greener Daventry District by helping to recycle 11.52 tonnes of old Yellow Pages directories.

Twenty-six schools in the district have taken part in the Yellow Woods Challenge – the simple, educational and fun environmental campaign run by Yellow Pages, the Woodland Trust and Daventry District Council.

Schools learnt about recycling and important green issues in the classroom, whilst competing against each other for the chance to win cash prizes from Yellow Pages for recycling the most old directories per pupil.

Brington Primary School scooped the prestigious ‘Gold Oak’ title and was rewarded with £300 for recycling 6.55 old directories per pupil.

The ‘Silver Birch’ award and £200 prize money went to Falconers Hill Infant School while Southbrook Infant and Nursery School carried off the ‘Bronze Beech’ certificate and £100 in cash.

Weedon Bec Primary School bagged the bonus prize of £100 for Best Artwork.

The top-performing schools were honoured at a celebratory event held at Council Chambers, Daventry District Council, Lodge Road on July 8, 2008.

For every pound awarded to schools, Yellow Pages gives a matching pound to the Woodland Trust to support their ‘Tree For All’ campaign.

The old Yellow Pages directories will be recycled into brand new home insulation materials by Leicester Paper Processes Ltd.
