Children from a village school were singing the praises of helping the environment when a plastic-bag-free initiative went live this week.
The youngsters from Brixworth School were joining local traders, residents and scheme supporters at the official launch of the environmental campaign, and were sing three songs inspired by the scheme to mark its launch.
From Thursday (June 26), the majority of stores in the village will do away with plastic bags in favour of more environmentally friendly carriers, in the scheme backed by Daventry District Council.
A free, unbleached organic Fairtrade foldable cotton bag has been delivered to every household in Brixworth, thanks to Merry’s Estate Agents. The design on one side of the bag was the winner in a competition run among pupils at Brixworth CEVC Primary School.
Talented pupils sang Go Green, Please Recycle and Don’t Put Your Muck In Our Dustbin – three songs written at the school and were performed in public for the first time at the launch outside Brixworth Library
The scheme was the idea of Heather Pool, Customer Service Advisor at Daventry District Council’s Brixworth Information Service.
“We have achieved so much in such a short space of time, it is quite incredible. It has only been possible because of the support of the council, local residents and local businesses,” she said.
“We still have some way to go though. Brixworth is by no means plastic-bag-free. However, there is a huge difference now with the launch of this scheme. Residents are doing what they can to reuse their bags when they go shopping and many stores will no longer routinely hand out single-use plastic bags to shoppers. This means the waste created in Brixworth from single-use plastic bags has dropped dramatically.
”It just goes to show what a big difference each individual can make. We now hope other areas will look at what we have done and follow our lead to help cut the use of plastic bags across the whole district.”
Local shops supporting the initiative will display a sticker with the PLASTIC-CARRIER-BAG-FREE ZONE slogan. Alternative bags are available from stores and reusable bags can be bought in the village.
Cllr Catherine Boardman, Environment Portfolio Holder for Daventry District Council, said: “The whole community of Brixworth is to be commended for the way it has pulled together to support this scheme. This initiative should really put Brixworth on the map as a place where local people have got together to do something tangible to help the environment.
“I am delighted this scheme is launching and hope it will continue to be a huge success story for all concerned.”
