A tree made from aluminium cans will be planted at Daventry Country Park next month in recognition of the district’s continued commitment to recycling.
Youngsters from The Grange School in Staverton Road will make the tree from aluminium drinks cans on December 4, along with Daventry District Council’s Street Scene Officer and Countryside Rangers.
The youngsters will then plant the aluminium tree sculpture along with a crab apple tree, which has been donated by not-for-profit organisation Alupro as a thank-you to Daventry residents who have recycled cans that they have used to help people living in rural Malawi.
Jo Gilford, Corporate Manager of Public Space at Daventry District Council, said: “Alupro grows a fruit tree in Malawi for every ton of aluminium cans and foil recycled in the UK and have donated the tree as a thank-you to people in the Daventry District for continuing their great work in recycling.”
The cans used in the tree will be recycled once Daventry Country Park has finished with the sculpture.
Councillor Catherine Boardman, Portfolio Holder for Environment, said: “We are very pleased to accept the crab apple tree from Alupro in recognition of our continued efforts in recycling waste across the district.
“Building the tree sculpture from aluminium cans will help raise the childrens awareness of the importance of recycling and replenishing the resources that we all use.”
