Drinking water - Update

30/6/08

Daventry District Council is continuing to work with Anglian Water to publicise the latest information following the discovery of cryptosporidium in water supplies.

Anglian Water reiterated today that people in the Daventry area should continue to boil any water from the taps before drinking it, using it for cooking, supplying pets or brushing teeth, but that it was perfectly safe for use for washing and flushing toilets. Customers should continue to do this until they receive a notification card giving the all clear.

However, it confirmed that the Pitsford Water Treatment Works is now producing water free from cryptosporidium.

More than half of the affected homes should have the boil notice lifted by the end of the week, but some properties could be affected for up to two weeks.

Daventry District Council is working with Anglian Water to provide the public with information at temporary drop-in facilities in Daventry, Long Buckby, and Brixworth.

Anglian Water’s mobile incident unit will be in New Street, Daventry from 9am on Saturday to offer members of the public advice and assistance.  Anglian Water’s staff will also be available at the Abbey from 9am on Monday 30th June and at the Council’s Brixworth and Long Buckby Outreach centres.

A multi-agency meeting at Pitsford today was attended by Daventry Council’s Leader and Executive Director, Chris Millar and Ian Vincent.

Following the meeting Councillor Millar’s response was that he considered the discussions to be very positive.  He said …“it is encouraging to see how committed all key agencies are to working together to resolve the current situation.  The welfare of our community is paramount and Daventry Council will continue to work closely with the Utilities to minimise the impact this incident may have.

Ian Vincent added that he felt reassured that Anglian Water were taking all the necessary steps to resolve the matter as soon as possible.  It was his view that the measures now being taken would lead to a timely lifting of the boil water instruction.

Regular updates for residents will be given through local media and on Anglian Water's website www.anglianwater.co.uk, the Health Protection Agency website www.hpa.org.uk, and Daventry District Council’s website www.daventrydc.gov.uk.  Anglian Water's call centre number is 08457 145 145.
