Fraud reporting

Fraud and corruption is an ever present danger for both local authorities and their citizens, which costs the taxpayer hundreds of million of pounds each year. It threatens to undermine the aims of the Council and damage its reputation, therefore as an authority we are committed to the prevention, detection and investigation of fraud and corruption.

The Council has a dedicated fraud team that deals with Benefit Fraud. Further information on the reporting of Benefit Fraud can be found by clicking the Benefit fraud link.

All other types of fraud and corruption are generally dealt with by the Council's Internal Audit team who are responsible for investigating all types of fraud and corruption on behalf of the Council other than benefit fraud.

Effects of fraud and corruption

Every pound lost through fraud within the public sector directly affects citizens by increasing taxation levels or threatening essential services, it is not a victimless crime.  Help us to ensure that all spending goes on delivering and improving services to you.

For this reason, councils are developing a zero tolerance approach towards fraud.  Daventry District Council proactively seeks to deter, prevent and detect any instances of fraud and corruption.  This is done by creating and implementing counter fraud policies and procedures and by training and supporting specialist staff to prevent and detect fraud.

Whistle blowing is one of the top sources of information by which public bodies identify and stop frauds.  If you have reason to believe that either:

  • a Councillor

  • an employee of the local authority

  • a contractor or supplier to the council

  • a member of the public

is behaving dishonestly or fraudulently, you should raise your concerns. This could be anything from giving false information to claim grants to Inducements or reward to staff or councillors to influence decisions etc.

Please help us to continue stopping people steal your money.

To let us know your concerns please call the dedicated Countywide Confidential Anti-Fraud Hotline (run by Expolink, an external organisation) on 0800 731 6202. This number can be used in confidence, and can be used totally anonymous if you so wish.

Alternatively, you can contact the Internal Audit team via their dedicated e-mail address: fraud@daventrydc.gov.uk
