The full Council Tax bill is worked out on the assumption that there are two adults over 18 years of age in a dwelling.
Single Person Discount - 25%
If only one adult lives in a dwelling as his or her main home, the bill can be reduced by 25%.
Other discounts
Certain people are not counted when looking at the number of adult residents in a property if they meet certain conditions. For example, people who are:
- full time students, student nurses, apprentices and youth training trainees;
- 18- and 19-year olds who are at, or who have just left, school or college;
- patients whose main residence is in hospital;
- people being looked after permanently in care homes;
- people staying in certain hostels or night shelters;
- care workers working for low pay, usually for charities;
- people who care for someone with a disability who is not their husband or wife, partner or a child under 18;
- members of visiting forces and certain international institutions;
- foreign diplomats;
- members of religious communities (monks and nuns);
- people in detention; and

the severely mentally impaired.
If someone else over 18 moves into the property please contact us straight away as this may affect the discount. If you falsely claim the discount it is a criminal offence and you may have to go to court and be fined.
