Climate Change - Overview & Impacts

What is Climate Change?

The climate of the Earth is always changing. In the past the climate has altered as a result of natural causes. Nowadays, however, the term ‘climate change’ is used when referring to changes in our climate, which have been identified over the last 100 years. The changes we've seen over recent years and those, which are predicted this century, are thought to be mainly as a result of human behaviour rather than due to natural changes in the atmosphere. What are the Impacts & Opportunities of Climate Change?

The change in temperature will cause major problems all over the world.  The main fear is that if temperatures continue to increase, the polar ice caps will begin to melt resulting in a higher sea level. Other impacts will see a change in rainfall patterns. There may be a change in the force of storms and hurricanes but there may also be an increased occurrence of droughts during summer. The species of plants and animals around us may change. More information can be found here: Climate Change Impacts & Opportunities Factsheet

Daventry District Council is a Signatory to the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change. On 12th October 2006, representatives from Daventry District Council signed the Nottingham Declaration on Climate Change. The Nottingham Declaration is a commitment to reduce our carbon emissions by adopting greater energy efficiency measures and increasing travel by encouraging walking, cycling, car-sharing and public transport use. It is also about adopting renewable energy technologies in the district and building adaptation requirements into existing and new developments.
