What is litter?
Litter can be anything, crisp packets, cigarette ends, a piece of chewing gum, dog waste, which has been dropped on our streets. It is careless activity from people who do not use the litter, cigarette and dog waste bins provided.
Why is it a problem?
- It is unsightly - litter is associated with crime and anti-social behaviour and the area is perceived to be neglected. It can discourage people from visiting the area.
- It is illegal - littering is an illegal activity and the council have the powers to take enforcement action against those who act illegally.
- It is costly to remove - it costs us thousands of pounds to remove it.
- It is unsafe - litter attracts vermin such as rats and other disease carrying pests which can cause hazards for human health. Litter can cause injury to wildlife and human health.
There is no need to drop litter or fail to remove your dogs waste, as there are approximately 750 litter bins and 250 dog located throughout the district, all of which are emptied regularly, and new bins are being installed regularly. Place your rubbish in a litter bin or if there isn't a bin nearby take your rubbish home.

Litter Patrols
Dropping litter is an environmental crime. The law allows councils to issue fines to people who drop litter and if we see you dropping litter or failing to remove your dogs waste you could receive a fine of £75 from the council.
