Environmental awareness through education

Daventry District Council are running a number of campaigns and initiatives to emphasis the need for environmental protection and to reduce the number of environmental crimes being committed.

Am I Bover'd? Campaign

The 'Am I Bover'd? you should be!' campaign aims to encourage residents to be more responsible for their waste and to make sure waste gets disposed in the correct way. The slogan means

Be
Observant
Value the
Environment
Respect
Daventry District.

Children, adults and visitors of the district will be targeted to reduce littering, graffiti, fly-tipping, fly-posting and additional waste (through encouraging recycling). Look out for the various campaign material that will be distributed around the district and the activities which the council are running throughout the year.

The campaign will raise awareness of enforcement action which will commence against people committing environmental crimes. This includes the issue of warnings, fixed penalty notices and prosecutions. Environmental crimes will not be tolerated in the district and this campaign will make people aware of the actions taken by the council to combat the problem.

Enforcement Activities

Mock fixed penalty notices will be issued to the public to raise awareness of the seriousness of committing environmental crimes and the repercussions they can face. Mock notices will be issued in the run up to the introduction of enforcement activity within the district but after this time offenders will be liable to pay a fine.

Street performances

Street theatre will play a large role in raising awareness of litter issues. Street performances will interact with the public and encourage them to use litter bins instead of littering the streets of Daventry. They will consider chewing gum and cigarette butts as many people are unaware these are classified as litter. Performances will also target those who throw rubbish from moving vehicles.

Waste and recycling

Activities will continue to be run within Daventry district to ensure residents are aware of what waste should be placed in the different bins and to encourage greater recycling. Games will be run with children to emphasis the need for recycling and to ensure they are aware of how much waste is produced and what happens with it once its placed in a bin.

Education in schools

We work with schools to educate children about the environment and recycling. We can provide assemblies, talks, anti litter days, workshops, competitions and award schemes including the best kept school, aid litter picks and help schools gain Eco-school status from ENCAMS. Schools also have available to them the Waste Education Bus run by Northampton County Council which is an interactive bus to raise awareness of environmental issues.
