Additional household waste is the rubbish which is left by a grey bin or on top of preventing the lid to close on collection day for removal by refuse staff. It is council policy not to collect any additional waste which has been placed out by householders.
The council guidelines are
- Waste must be contained within the bin ready for collection
- Bins should be placed out for collection by 6.30am on the designated collection day for your area. You can find out your collection day by clicking the link.
- Bins should be within a metre of the curtiledge as shown here
- Bins should be brought back to within your boundary on the same day after collection
- Any additional waste will be left by the refuse staff.
Additional waste can be reduced by increased recycling of household items. You can find out more about recycling by clicking the link.
Failure to comply with these guidelines can result in enforcement action being taken against the householder in line with legislation. Householders have the responsibility for their waste and can face a fine if they continue to ignore council guidelines and legislation. Such examples facing enforcement action include
- Additional waste left on the public highway will be deemed as flytipping
- Bins placed out in the wrong location
- Bins left on out non-collection days.
Bulky items
Bulky items should not be left out for collection on normal collection days as refuse operatives will not remove them. Householders have the responsibility to dispose of large items such as fridges, sofas and mattresses at the local household recycling centre at Browns Road or arrange for a bulky waste collection by the council.

Duty of Care
Householders have a duty of care for waste collected by a contractor, other than the council. Householders are responsible for ensuring the contractor is registered with the Environment Agency and licensed to carry waste. More details can be found at
http://www.environment-agency.gov.uk/ Failure to do so can result in a fine being issued to the contractor and the householder.
