Abandoned Shopping Trolleys

Shopping trolley

The Council have implemented a new initiative to remove abandoned trolleys that are found on our streets.

The initiative comes about as part of the Clean Neighbourhood and Environment Act 2005 which states that Local Authorities are able to remove abandoned trolleys from public land and recharge supermarkets for the removal service.

Any trolley found will be notified to the supermarket owner and they will be given 3 days to remove the trolley. Failure to do so will result in Council staff removing the trolley and returning it for storage. Supermarkets will be given the opportunity to claim the trolley but if they fail to do so each trolley will be recycled. The supermarkets will therefore incur a cost if they fail to resolve the problem of abandoned trolleys.

To reduce the number of abandoned trolleys around the district the public are urged not to remove the trolleys from supermarket boundaries.

However If you find an abandoned trolley please report the following details to the council on 01327 871100

  • Location of the trolley

  •  When you saw it

  •  Which supermarket the trolley is from

  • How many there are

  • The condition of the trolley.
