Proposed Kitchen Waste Collection

A plan to introduce weekly kitchen food waste collections from households in Northamptonshire has been put on hold due to financial constraints imposed by the economic downturn.

The Kitchen Food Waste Project was being developed by the Northamptonshire Waste Partnership (NWP) which is made up of the district and borough councils working together with Northamptonshire County Council.

The doorstep collections would allow kitchen food waste which could not be normally composted at home, such as cooked food and meat, to be collected from households in the county and transported to a treatment facility to be composted using the latest technology.

The project board has taken the decision for the introduction of this service to be temporarily deferred until, it is anticipated, the latter part of 2012.

Cllr Chris Millar, NWP chairman, said: “Overall the workings of the project are sound and when the service is implemented this will be an excellent scheme for Northamptonshire.

“But the budget constraints affecting many councils at the moment means that now is not the right time for it to be given the go-ahead.”
