Lost and Found Dogs
Our Dog Warden can help if you lose your dog.
We have a duty to deal with stray dogs that are becoming a nuisance or a danger on the road.
If a dog is caught straying, we will try to trace the owners and return it if it is wearing a tag or is microchipped. Otherwise it will be kept safely for up to seven days when taken to the local dog rescue home.
What do I do if I find a stray?
If you find a stray dog:-
The contact details for a stray dog during office hours (Monday to Thursday: 8.30am - 5.00pm and Friday: 8.30 am - 4.30pm) is on the Councils main telephone number 01327 302277
The contact details for the Councils acceptance point for stray dogs is:
Forest Lodge Kennels, Forest Road, Quinton, Northampton, NN7 2EQ. 01604 862239.
These kennels are open 7 days a week between 8am and 4pm.
For a stray dog out of normal office hours the public can call 01527 551881. This is the Councils emergency environmental health service. It must be noted that the out of hours Dog Warden will only collect contained strays and not strays that are roaming freely.
Identification tags and chips
Dogs must wear a collar and tag when out in a public place and you can be prosecuted if you do not do this.
The tag (or similar method of identification) should include your name and address and contact telephone numbers. This helps finders re-unite you with your lost pet.
You can micro chip your dog so that it can always be identified. We can do this for you. The permanent chip is easy to update if your details change and can be read by a scanner.
Contact the Dog Warden for more info.
Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 amended by the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005
It is an offence under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 not to clean up after your dog if it fouls. If you are caught you will receive a fixed penalty notice of £50, which if not paid, could result in possible prosecution where the maximum penalty then is £1000.
Members of the public can help reduce dog fouling in the area in which they live by contacting the Dog Warden if they suspect someone is allowing their dog to foul.
NOISE NUISANCE – BARKING DOGS
The Dog Warden service investigates complaints regarding noisy dogs under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.
If you have any complaints or queries about noisy dogs, please contact the Dog Warden where your complaint will be logged and dealt with.
Dangerous Dogs Act 1991 & Dogs Act 1871
You could be breaking the law by allowing your dog to be dangerously out of control.
Under the Dogs Act 1871, any person may make a complaint to a magistrates court that a dog is dangerous, or report the matter to the Local Authority. If the court is satisfied that a dog is dangerous and not kept under proper control, it may make an order for it to be controlled or destroyed.
