According to the Audit Commission, the amount of fraud detected by Councils has fallen for the first time in 10 years, but still totals over £100 million. Public bodies remain vulnerable to fraud but vigilance against this ever present risk must be maintained.
To help in this battle, six Northamptonshire Councils including Daventry District got together to launch a confidential hotline which is run by an independent company called "Expolink" and is open to people to blow the whistle on anyone they suspect is cheating the Council. This could include those who abuse the benefits system, obtain grants unlawfully, misuse council contracts or steal council property or money.
If you believe that public money is being obtained by fraud you should ring the hotline (0800 731 6202) and provide details. All calls are free and strictly confidential.
For any other public bodies or agencies that are based in Northamptonshire, print out a copy of the poster and place it on your notice boards. We all need to fight against fraud.
Remember, every pound lost to fraud in local government is a pound not spent on front line services such as education and social services.
